HAZELNUTS corlyus spp

These are truly rugged shrubs as tough as any bush you might find growing in a wild field. There are few trees as easy to establish as the hazel. Hazelnuts have powerfully tough wood that's been used for centuries to weave wattle fences. Hazels can grow in the sun or shade, in clay or sand. They are reliable producers of highly nutritious, delicious kernels. Hazelnuts are one of the strongest allies in our tree crops community. If I could only plant 3 types of trees on my homestead, they would be one of them.

Rugged Hazelnut: This seed strain is highly productive and composed of primarily American genetics. Nuts are small or medium sized with thick shells. Extremely cold hardy, at least zone 3 and a high level of disease resistance. Crops have been huge at a young age with minimal care.

Cracker Hazelnut: Named for ease of shelling, this strain produces copious amounts of thin shelled, medium and large nuts. They are an even mix of European and American genetics. Cold hardy to zone 4 with good disease resistance.

Truxton: This is a cloned variety developed by Jeff Zarnowski from Z’s Nutty Ridge. Produces exceptionally huge nuts. Needs to be pollinated by other Hazelnuts.

Every seedling is different. For the most part we are seeing compact shrubs covered with nuts at an early age. Fruiting usually starts by age 3-5

Hybrid Hazel- Our shybrid hazels have been bred for nut production, cold hardiness, and disease resistance. They come from breeding programs in the upper Midwest from Mark Sheperd and Badgersett. They were selected more for heavy overall yields than large individual nuts. The majority of their genetics are American. They are virtually bomb proof plants, very hardy and easy to establish in almost any landscape.
