Haskaps
Haskaps
Haskaps aka honeyberries (lonicera careulea) are in the honeysuckle family. They are fast growing shrubs that reach about 6 feet in height. They are native to the boreal forests around the globe. Hardy to zone 3. Deer rarely browse them. The berries taste like a cross between a blueberry and a pomegranate. They are relished by birds.
Plants grown from seed will have variable fruit, but all of them will be good for fresh eating, juice, drying, and wildlife. Our seeds are collected from our plantings here at Twisted Tree Farm. We are growing dozens of outstanding varieties of Russian and Japanese parentage.
The Russian varieties ripen earlier, as soon as May 21 on our site in New York State. The Japanese varieties ripen in late June and early July. They tend to produce larger sweeter fruit, but many of the Russian ones do as well. The Japanese varieties flower later than the Russians, so they are not cross pollinated by each other.
Seed Packs of approximately 100 seeds $15 Our seeds are picked fresh and packed in damp sand immediately. They never have a chance to dry out which signifcantly increases germination rates. If planted right away, they will germinate within a month. Refrigerated, they can stay dormant for a few months
